Chandler Riggs became a certified zombie killer at the tender age of ten, when he was cast as rootin’ tootin lil’ Carl Grimes in AMC’s soon to be hit new series The Walking Dead.
We spoke to Chandler as he gears us for an appearance at Walker Stalker Con, which is coming to a Sydney and Melbourne potentially near you in February next year.
So straight up we wanted to know, since he was so young when he started getting ankle deep in the fictionalised apocalypse, did the showrunners try and protect him from some of the more messed up stuff? “Not at all,” said Chandler. “I mean, I love zombies and I love playing zombie killing video games, so I was always super into the zombies, seeing how it all works and seeing the blood everywhere. I love that kind of stuff.”
If you’ve watched the series and gotten amongst the fandom post-show, you’ll know that apart from Carl’s jaunty hat he’s also well known as the star of the COORRRRAALLLLL meme. So what’s that like for Chandler?
“You know it was kind of funny for the first few months. But 5 after the meme originated, it kind of gets old – – especially when people yell ‘CORAL’ at me”.
So The Walking Dead has quite a high turnover of cast members because people die and that’s just the kind of show it is, but the Carl has managed to hang around for a long time. Even though Chandler is only 18-years-old he kind of feels like a parental figure on set:
“We’ve had a few characters this season who I feel so bad for, because they’re coming in in the midst of all the war and the craziness with the explosions and everything. Yeah, I mean I definitely feel like an OG or a veteran because I’ve been on…
