UPDATE 9AM: Fire crews are dampening down hot spots inside the charred ruins of a timber home on the Warrego Hwy at Gowrie Mountain before investigations get under way.
Road crews working on the Warrego Hwy and passing motorists raised the alarm with authorities about 2am when the fire took hold.
The home was unoccupied at the time and the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
Oakey police Officer-in-Charge Sergeant John Cook commended the rapid actions of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services at the scene which stopped the fire spreading to a nearby shed and animal pens, as well as dry grass paddocks.
EARLIER 7.55AM: An early morning fire has destroyed a home west of Toowoomba.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services were called to the property on the Warrego Hwy near Zimm’s Corner at Gowrie Mountain about 2am after reports thick smoke was seen in the area.
The single-level timber home was engulfed by flames when crews arrived on scene minutes later, and there were no occupants inside at the time.
QFES urban crews and several Rural Fire Brigades were called into help extinguish the fire, using tanker water supplies due to water access issues.
Queensland Ambulance paramedics were on standby at the incident but they reported no one was taken to hospital from the scene.
