A MORANBAH man accused of stealing a ute when its driver pulled over to let a puppy relieve itself has faced court.
Police allege Jerry Abreu, 38, from Moranbah stole the car, which was stopped on Bellavista Circuit in Beaconsfield, on August 5 about 3.10pm.
“The driver has exited the car at the same time to have a cigarette on the roadside. When the dog was ready, it has returned to the nearby car and entered it. The driver continued to smoke on the roadside before hearing his car being driven away. Dog and all,” Mackay police Senior Constable Steve Smith alleged on August 7.
“Unfortunately for the victim, the car had been left unlocked with the keys inside and even though the driver was only a very short distance away finishing his cigarette, someone managed to drive off with the vehicle and dog.
“Fortunately, the stolen car was later intercepted in Creal Street in East Mackay by police for the purpose of a roadside breath test of the driver. Enquiries made by the intercepting police revealed the car to be the one earlier stolen in Beaconsfield.”
Abreu has been charged with car theft, stealing, possessing dangerous drugs and failing to properly dispose of a syringe on August 5 in Beaconsfield and East Mackay.
He faced Mackay Magistrates Court on Tuesday for the charges to be briefly mentioned.
Abreu did not enter pleas and the case was adjourned to a later date.
