The debate over the future of colonial-era statues in Australia took a damaging turn over the weekend.
Monuments to former NSW governor Lachlan Macquarie and Captain Cook in Sydney’s Hyde Park were defaced.
The two statues were spray-painted with the words, “Change the date” — while the statue of Captain Cook was also defaced with the words, “No pride in genocide”.
The debate was first triggered by events in Charlottesville in the US where moves to tear down a Civil War monument statue led to riots and violence.
