When journalist Craig Silverman was researching potential Russian interference in the US election, he uncovered something unusual.
He found a cluster of almost 150 websites devoted to US politics being run from a small town in Macedonia.
The majority of these were pro-Trump sites, reproducing fake news stories which would then be shared extensively across social media platforms, usually, Facebook.
Craig says most people who run fake news sites are motivated by money not politics, and that social media platforms have been slow to crack down.
He explains how people unwittingly support the cycle of fake news by clicking on and sharing stories.
He also explains how The Press became President Trump’s enemy number one, and why demonising them is working for him.
Craig is the Media Editor of Buzzfeed
He is in Australia as a guest of the Walkley Foundation’s Storyology Festival, held at the Brisbane Powerhouse, 23- 25 August
